Are We Breaking Up?

Born and bred in Toronto (conceived in Montreal, if you must know), I'm intensely devoted to my city. However, over the last year or two, I've grown increasingly frustrated with this place.

Is it the people? (yes). Is it me? (maybe). Can I make through one more disgusting, humid summer? (we'll see).

Toronto, give me a reason to stay. Or maybe we're just meant to be friends who are secretly in love each other?

Spring Update

I've been neglecting this blog again. Since the three of you who actually read this thing are in daily contact with me, this may sound familiar.

*Twitter me @ www.twitter.com/csalvino

*Check out the feature article I wrote on Mount Sinai's palliative care centre for children. It's featured on the front page of Hospital News, a newspaper that is distributed in hospitals across Canada. www.hospitalnews.com

*My internship at Mount Sinai is over on April 24. I have some great pieces for my portfolio and my resume is starting to shape up. I don't have anything lined up in terms of a job, though. Oh well...

Update: I'm working at the Toronto Board of Trade this summer as the public affairs intern.

*April is concert month for me. You will find me at the Metric/Holy Fuck, Bat for Lashes and Thunderheist gigs.
* I'm graduating in June, and saying goodbye to NIN on their tour with Jane's Addiction on June 2.

* U2 is playing the Rogers Centre on September 16 & 17. I'll be there both nights on the floor.

* I may have mentioned this already, but I adore the Handsome Furs.

Are Posh and I the Same Person?

I'm starting to think so...

"I love women. I like them as friends, as interesting people to speak with. But I love gay men. I always say it: inside me there is a gay man who wants to come out! With heterosexual men, I have nothing in common - excluding my husband, brothers and father, you understand."

Blashemy!

I don't like cover songs at the best of times. Yeah, I know most bands start out as cover bands and that's the only time I'll let it slide. You gotta start somewhere, right?

Well, I've noticed a recent trend in bubblegum pop groups covering or sampling Depeche Mode.

What's going on? Have the pop group manufacturers laid off all the writers in the factory due to the economy?

I made it through 25 seconds of The Saturdays cover of Just Can't Get Enough (I know, a long time but I had to hear the first line) and two things went through my mind:

1) I wish I was deaf
2) A bad cover song should be punished with jail time with no option of parole

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

"I Know I Believe in Nothing, but it is My Nothing"

Dear Richey Edwards:

The news that your family changed your legal status to "presumed dead" has left me heartbroken. I find it strange that, after almost 14 years, I'm sitting in my room crying as I type this. The wound feels fresh again now that it's "official."

May 15, 1991 - Richey carved "4 Real" into his arm with a razorblade in response
to an NME journalist questioning the Manics punk-rock credentials.

Deep in my black heart, I always held hopes that one day you would return or, for your family's sake, your body be found so they could have closure. You never made any secret of your struggles with depression, self-harm and anorexia, but could you have taken your own life? Only you know the answer. "I don't blame you."

Culture Sluts

Thank you for all the beautiful music you made with the Manic Street Preachers.  Your song Little Baby Nothing inspired this blog and inspires me every day.  The Holy Bible is your masterpiece and still sounds incredible and relevant after 14 years.

Richey on suicide, 1994: "In terms of the 'S' word, that does not enter my mind.
And it never has done, in terms of an attempt.  Because I am stronger than that.
I might be a weak person, but I can take pain."

I still believe that you're out there somewhere.  Maybe living happily in a peaceful and quiet part of the world.

Stay Beautiful.

Love,
Christina xxx

Post Secret

You should see my Facebook photos!

A friend recently turned me on to the Post Secret blog.  It seems I'm late to the show as everyone around me knew about this phenomenon and there are even Post Secret books.

Since I was young, I've felt no connection to the social standards placed, specifically, on girls. Family gatherings are filled with questions inquiring as to the whereabouts of my boyfriend.

"Never felt like I needed any man to comfort me in life."

Post Secret reminds me that I'm not alone in the world.  There are others who feel what I feel and it makes me smile.  The above secret, literally, could have been written by me.

There's nothing wrong with getting married (or having a boyfriend/girlfriend).  It's just not at the top of my "to do" list.  Plus, Mr. Darcy seems to have forgotten my number.

Super Cute Valentine's Day Card!

 by kseniya

I believe that in about 10 years my sister will be sending me this Valentine's Day card.

Description:

"Fourth in our Valentine series, and first in our We Heart The Smiths, You Heart The Smiths series.  The tiny, tiny heart belies our deep abiding love for both The Smiths and Steven Patrick Morrissey.

Kseniya's brother sent her this in a text message, but really it speaks to every repentant child of the 80s."

Noel Gallagher on The Smiths - a must watch!

Morrissey - All You Need is Me, from Years of Refusal album (Feb. 23/09)

The Smiths - There is a Light That Never Goes Out, my favourite song EVER.

The Perfect Man!

I was starting to think that there was no man out there for me. Well, he exists and only costs $19.95!

Meet the "Boyfriend Arm Pillow." He sounds like a steal:

"Never curl up on the couch alone again, with this comforting arm that wraps around you as if to say, "I'm sorry work was rotten today," or "No, you pick what we watch tonight," all the stuff you'd never hear from a real boyfriend.  Polyester filled with comfortable, snuggly foam."

Now I'll have someone to snuggle with while I watch True Blood.

"I Wanna Do Bad Things with You"

I recently discovered the hottest show not on T.V., True Blood
("It's not TV. It's HBO"). This show gets my blood boiling for all the right reasons!

"Isn't that show...pornographic?," asked my sister. Oh yes! I used to be in bed, alone, Sunday at 9 p.m. Now I have something to look forward to. My sister is now hooked as well.

Would you say "no" to him?!

Vampire Bill Compton's vitals read like I wrote them for my "What Are You Looking For?" blurb on Lavalife.

I watched the first seven episodes online and so can you, WatchTVSitcoms.com

*Note: I do not have a Lavalife account. I swear.*

Nick Cave Has Spoken

This man's voice and lyrics break my heart.

"Kylie Minogue is the greatest thing that has happened to  Australian music," Cave told Cream magazine.

"Before her the world didn't have a fucking clue about our music nor any interest in it.  Kylie has more greatness in her little fingernail than every fucking Aussie indie band put together."

THIS is Music

The Verve write the songs that Coldplay only wish they could write.

Richard Ashcroft is a genius poet. Even foolish Chris Martin showed love calling Mr. Ashcroft, "the greatest singer in the world."

Viva La Silence

Coldplay posted a new Viva la Vida video. I guess they realized how shitastic the original was.

Note on Coldplay.com: "This is our attempt at a video cover version, made out of love for Depeche Mode and the genius of Anton Corbijn."

Shitty original video

I've Been Busy...but not really

My sister complained to me yesterday that I haven't updated my blog for a while, so here's an update.

What have I been doing?

1. Reading, reading, reading

2. Thinking about those who are dead

3. Catching up on movies

4. Talking to my imaginary friends

5. Having nightmares and not sleeping well

6. Being a bitch to everyone (except Ash)

7. Wondering why The Joker (TDK version) is the only "person" I can relate to right now

8. Wishing music still had Kurt Cobain

9. Planning my escape

10. Reminding everyone that, "I wear black on the outside because black is how I feel on the inside."

Favourite Dark Knight Quotes

I went to see The Dark Knight in IMAX yesterday and it is worth the extra $3 or $4.  Stunning! The Dark Knight deserves a Best Picture nomination.

As I was watching the movie, I realized that it wasn't Heath Ledger on the screen, but the Joker. His performance is perfect. Sorry Jack Nicholson, Heath kicked your Joker to the curb and pissed all over him.

There is one line in the movie that had me on the verge of tears: "I think you and I are destined to do this forever." When the Joker said that to Batman that's when it hit me that Heath is no longer around. What he did with this character is unbelievable. To think what could have been...

Here are my favourite quotes in order of the chills they sent down my spine:

Commissioner Gordon: Because he's the hero that Gotham deserves, but not the one it needs right now...and so we'll hunt him...because he can take it...because he's not a hero...he's a silent guardian, a watchful protector...a DARK KNIGHT...

The Joker (to Batman):  I don't want to kill you! What would I do without you? You...you complete me.

The Joker: LOOK AT ME!

The Joker (to Batman):  Ohh you.  You just couldn't let me go could you? This is what happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object.  You truly are incorruptible, aren't you? Huh? You won't kill me out of some misplaced sense of self-righteousness.  And I won't kill you...cause you're just too much fun. Hee hee. I think you and I are destined to do this forever.

The Joker: I believe, whatever doesn't kill you simply makes you.......stranger.

The Joker: Let's put a smile on that face!

Harvey Dent: You either die a villain, or you live long enough to see yourself become one.

The Joker (to police officer): You wanna know...why I use a knife?  Guns are too quick.  You can't savour all those little emotions.  In the their last moments, people show you who they really are.  So I guess I know your friends better than you ever did. Would you like to know which of them were cowards?

The Joker:  Come on come on come on I want you to do it...Come on I want you to do it I want you to do it come on...hit me.  Come on hit me, hit me...HIT ME!

Basically, anything that came out of the Joker's mouth was brilliant. The entire movie is filled with awesome quotes.

**Thank you Heath - July 18, 2008 @ 11:45 a.m. you put a smile on my face**

Flashing Lights

When I'm walking through Queen's Park station on my way to work in the morning I listen to Kanye's Flashing Lights and I like to pretend I'm the girl in the video.

Her figure, boobs/cleavage, legs, the way she walks and how she uses that shovel so well.
